Closed forests are areas with canopy density greater than 45 percent (%). Mosaic restoration integrates trees into mixed-use landscapes, such as agricultural lands and settlements. Remote restoration refers to deforested or degraded forest lands that are completely unpopulated and located far away from human settlements. Agricultural lands refer to croplands used for food production.

A comparison of the maps of current and potential forests used to identify forest condition, including areas of historical forest loss and degradation. This layer shows intact forest areas, fragmented/managed natural forests (fragmented by roads and/or managed for timber production), degraded forest areas, and deforested areas.

Current Forest Condition

Global extent of forest coverage, including categories of forest density. Closed forest refers to canopy density greater than 45 percent (%). Open forest refers to canopy density between 25-45%. Woodlands refer to sparse, savanna type forest with a canopy density between 10-25%. Non-forest areas are also shown.

Current Forest Coverage

An estimate of where forests would grow under current climate conditions and without human influence. This layer was calculated by combining data on soils, climate, elevation, and maps of historical forest extent.
